At our January meeting, world traveler and renowned photographer Jack May (ERA #2275) will present a slideshow consisting of scenes from both U.S. and foreign traction operations. He was in New Orleans this past November and will show Perley Thomas cars running on both Canal Street and St. Charles Avenue (as it is supposed to be!). Also included will be construction photos of the Canal line and operations of the prototype 2000-series deck roof cars and the Tatra demonstrator on lower Canal from pre-Katrina times.
Speaking of Tatras, Jack will also show scenes of his summer visit to eastern Europe, long the domicile of the Tatra PCC. The Tatras are getting old and new cars are coming on the scene, including low-floor units, rebodied and extended Tatras and the world’s longest streetcars. Jack visited Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, the Czech Republic, and Budapest last summer and he will contrast those photos with some he took 40 years earlier of PCC cars operating in the same cities, including the former D.C. Transit System units.
