Port Jervis Fantrip

Saturday, November 8, 2014

The ERA is pleased to announce a scenic fantrip to Port Jervis, New York. Port Jervis has a long railroad heritage, having had a large yard and Erie car shops, and neighbors the point where the states of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania meet.

We will ride the Metro-North Port Jervis Line over the former Erie Railroad’s Delaware Branch. Our route will cross the famous Moodna Viaduct (3,000 feet long and 100 feet high), through the mile-long Otisville Tunnel, and past the brilliant autumn scenery of New Jersey and New York.

Special Note: Metro-North announced in late October that a segment of their Port Jervis Line will be under General Order on the day of our excursion. The trip will be conducted as planned, as they will be operating bus service from Harriman to Port Jervis as per their regular operating schedule. The visit to the museum and lunch at Erie Hotel will not be affected and we expect the ride to remain as scenic as before — we might even come across some of Metro-North’s work trains.

Once we reach Port Jervis, we will be able to explore some of the rail-related treasures of this city. Most notably we will visit the original Erie Railroad Station, or Erie Depot, and see a working roundhouse turntable. Grattan & Jennings built the depot in the Queen Anne style in 1892. Although it was nearly torn down in the 1970s, it has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is now restored to its original grandeur.

Lunch will follow at the adjacent Erie Hotel. Participants will be able to order a variety of lunch choices and lunch will include soft drinks and coffee.
