The ERA is pleased to announce a tour of Staten Island Railway’s (SIR) new Clifton Maintenance Shop, our first trip to an MTA railcar maintenance facility since we visited the Long Island Rail Road’s Hillside Maintenance Complex in May 2019. SIR’s $165 million facility opened on December 7, 2022, replacing the previous shop which suffered severe damage during Hurricane Sandy. This new state-of-the-art facility is designed to be more storm resistant than its predecessor with provisions to prevent water intrusion, handle up to an additional three feet of storm surge, and withstand Category 2 hurricane water and wind pressures. Clifton’s layout and equipment allow for all necessary routine work on SIR cars to be conducted on-site and between peak periods, avoiding the need to be sent to the Coney Island Maintenance Facility in Brooklyn except for only the most complex repairs and overhauls.

All attendees will meet on the SIR Clifton Station platform no later than 10:45 a.m. To arrive by this time, you must depart Manhattan/Whitehall on the 10:00 a.m. Staten Island Ferry. When you arrive in Staten Island board the 10:36 a.m. train leaving St. George Terminal. ERA President Bob Newhouser will be at the terminal to greet you. We are still working on final details for this visit, but SIR supervision will meet us when we arrive at Clifton, divide us into two groups, and escort us into and around the facility.

In anticipation of the need for security clearance for all attendees, ensure that you have a photo ID in your possession and to wear sturdy shoes — that means no sandals, no sneakers, no Crocs, and no open-toe shoes. Failure to have a photo ID and sturdy shoes will result in denial of entry to the Clifton Shop.

MTA regulations require each participant submit a copy of their driver’s license, passport or other government issued photo identification (e.g., school ID card for a child) along with the order form on the reverse side of this flyer and the attached signed MTA waiver and release of liability form for each person participating. See reverse side for specific instructions. Any child under 18 must be accompanied by an adult to participate in this trip.
